3 is Germany's lucky number for last night's match, when they beat Uruguay 3-2 to obtain the 3rd place position.
I think Joachim Löw believes in giving people chances. So, for this match he decided to let four of his best players, Lahm, Klose, Podolski and even the goalkeeper, Neuer, sit and sent in four substitutes, Aogo, Cacau, Jansen and goalie Butt. Since both Ballack and Lahm were out, the captaincy was given to Bastian Schweinsteiger.
As always the person to initiate the goals was Thomas Müller at the 18th minute, after Bastian Schweinsteiger's failed attempt. That goal didn't demotivate the Uruguay team. Ten minutes after Germany's 1st goal, Uruguay scored theirs. The score was 1-1 for the 1st half.
During the 2nd half, Uruguay initiated the goals after the famous Diego Forlan scored his 5th goal for this World Cup. That didn't stop the German team. Five minutes later, Marcell Jansen's header equalized the score.
The game was tight. Both teams were fighting their way to the 3rd place. But, it was Germany's Sami Kedhira's first and last goal for the World Cup that put Germany in the 3rd place.
Seconds away to full time, Arne Friedrich got a yellow card, which gave the Uruguay team a free kick. They could easily score an equalizing goal, but Forlan kicked too high, giving Germany the win.
3rd place is not as good as the World champion title, but the German team didn't embarrass their country by going home too early like other strong teams. They fought to the end. All of the German players were given the chance to show off what they got on field, even for seconds, except for Tim Wiese. So, he got the bronze medal without having to do anything, except for cheering for the team from the side.
2010 is not the year for Germany to bring home the World champion title afterall, despite what people or animals predict. So, which team will bring home the title tonight?
