Initially, my step mom went back to Bandung to attend her sister's wedding. She was going to stay for 2 weeks. Then, my Papa noticed that there was a week holiday for the Chinese New Year. So, he decided that we all go and meet her there. She extended her stay for another 2 weeks. We were supposed to fly on the 23rd January. I went to my father's place 2 days earlier and my sister said that we might have to cancel the trip. My grandpa was seriously ill. But, nothing had been decided at that time. I went to sleep that night and at 4am my Papa woke my sister and me up. He told us that we were going back to Terengganu that very same day.
Then we drove to Terengganu and met our other family members on the way. 2 of my uncles and my aunt drove 1 car together. On the way, my father was kind of sleepy and let me drive his new Mercedes Benz. That was the first time I drove it. I never thought he would trust me with it. When I was driving I was sleepy, too. Luckily my father let me drive until the end of the highway only. He took over when we reached the small roads.
My grandpa was already admitted to the ICU ward since his condition was really bad. He had difficulty breathing that they had to put a tube into his mouth and out of his nose. He was not awake since they put him into sleep. I think they did that so that he would not suffer so much. We could not even see him unless it was the visiting hour. But, we could not leave him too. So, we took turns to wait for him. I know it sounds stupid to wait outside of the ward but we did that so that if anything happened his family members were there. After a few days, they took away the tube and replaced it with a mask. My grandpa was mostly sleeping but somehow if someone called him he would answer. My cousin even promoted his wedding.
After a few days, my grandpa was not lying anymore. He was already sitting and moving around. He was feeling uncomfortable but we thought it was going to be his last day. A day after that, he was transferred to the normal ward. This time, we could stay by his side and not outside. He was not depending on mask anymore. He recovered. However, his mind was not. He seemed to forget where he was and could not recognize his family members. It was funny that he remembered things in the past. He told my father about his dead friend named Alwi. My father had no idea which friend he was talking about.
Since my grandpa was not relying on any mask and that he was getting better, my father decided to take him home. We prepared a matress for him to sleep outside, so that we could all sleep outside and look after him. My grandpa has a very big living room. For a few nights, my sisters, my aunt, my step grandma and I stayed by my grandpa's side. The guys assisted him to the toilet and gave him shower. From day to day, my grandpa started to recover. He was not talking about the past anymore. My aunt asked if he realized that my uncles and cousins were there visiting him. He said he couldn't recall anything. So, it was useless that my cousin told him about the wedding.
On our last night there, my grandpa said he wanted to sleep in his room. So, we all returned to our rooms. That night, he woke up and looked for us. We did not know that, unless, we would all sleep outside. On our last day there, he was totally recovered. He could go to toilet on his own and he even called my name. When we went to see him the week before, we never thought that he would recover. But he did. Thank God for that. Now he is in the pink of health.
That's the whole story, Fatina. I told you it is long.
